The unsung heroes of our kitchens
The Kitchen Porter (KP), is absolutely vital to the smooth running of any kitchen, yet often overlooked. Not today! As we celebrate the annual National KP Day on 22nd June, we want to shine a spotlight on these essential team members, their hard work, and dedication to the role.
At Act-Clean, we are very lucky to work with more than 400 of the best KPs in the industry, some of whom have been with us for 10+ years!
The importance of the role of KP
Kitchen Porters are the backbone of any kitchen. They ensure that chefs have clean utensils and surfaces to work with, help maintain hygiene standards, and keep the kitchen running smoothly during service. Without KPs, the efficiency and cleanliness of the kitchen would suffer, directly impacting the quality of food and service.
What it takes to be a KP
Being a successful KP requires more than just the ability to clean and organise. The role calls for stamina, attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, and a strong work ethic. KPs need to be team players, as their role is crucial to supporting everyone in the kitchen. Reliability and a positive attitude are also key traits that help KPs thrive.
KP Spotlight
We chatted to Yesufu Oladepo, a long-standing KP at Act-Clean, and now a KP Supervisor at The Lansdowne Club, to hear what it really takes to be a successful KP.
How long have you been working as a KP with Act-Clean?
Over ten years now, I started 2013. I’ve worked at Oblix, Roast and Annabels before The Landsdowne Club.
Why have you stayed with Act-Clean for such a long time?
Act-Clean has always treated me well and provided me with a stable job. The team feels like family, and I enjoy the satisfying feeling I get from my work.
What are the most important qualities a KP should have?
It’s hard work so it’s very important to be a team player. You need to be ready to help your team whenever. Attention to detail is also crucial.
Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while working as a KP?
One of my favourite memories is when we started at The Lansdowne Club. It was very busy, but seeing everything come together, building relationships with the in-house team and knowing I played a part in that success was really great.
What advice would you give to someone starting out as a KP?
Be prepared to work hard and stay focused. Always talk with your team and never be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
How does Act-Clean support you in your role as a KP?
Act-Clean gives training and always makes sure we have the right equipment to do our jobs well. They are also very supportive and always there to listen if we have any concerns.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the busy kitchen. It’s very satisfying to know that without my work, the kitchen wouldn’t be able to run smoothly. It can be hard at times, but it’s very rewarding.
So, on National KP Day, we want to say a ginormous THANK YOU for the hard work and dedication of Kitchen Porters and KP Supervisors like Yesufu, who play an essential role in the success of any kitchen; particularly the restaurants, members clubs, and hotels of London that we serve at Act-Clean.
We are very proud to support and celebrate our KPs, recognising the invaluable contributions they make every day.
