In a fast-moving world, where guest expectations and operational challenges are constantly evolving, keeping ahead of industry trends and innovations isn’t just beneficial, it’s essential. As Head of Operations at Act-Clean, I see first-hand how innovation in cleaning, embracing new technologies and ways of working keeps our standards high, our clients happy, and our teams motivated.

Why Staying Ahead of Trends Matters
Cleaning has always been a manual, labour-intensive task: mop the floor, scrub by hand, and repeat. However, today’s industry is different. There’s more knowledge available now about what truly works.
For example, research has shown that if traditional mopping isn’t done properly, it is often just spreading dirt around rather than removing it.
Innovations now focus on more effective cleaning, health and safety improvements, and environmental responsibility.
Machines like the latest floor scrubbers not only clean better but use less water and minimise slip hazards, making the environments safer for both employees and guests.
Staying up-to-date also plays a critical role in staff retention and morale: providing our teams with the latest equipment, tools that make their jobs easier and more efficient shows them that Act- Clean is committed to their wellbeing and development. The result is a more engaged team.
Key Innovations and Trends from the Cleaning Show
I recently attended the Cleaning Show, and there were some themes I noticed. The first was innovation in machinery: I saw self-driving floor cleaners that use GPRS technology to map and navigate spaces independently, and products like the new iMop units, where the machine learns the layout and can then operate autonomously. These developments are exciting, though manual intervention and human oversight will always be needed.
The second thing I noticed was sustainability- which is top of mind for me personally:
Across the show, vendors showcased greener solutions:
• New types of floor pads and sponges made from more environmentally friendly materials.
• Machines designed to use less water and fewer harsh chemicals.
This commitment to sustainability is a necessity. Clients are increasingly asking about eco-friendly practices, and being able to offer greener solutions is a real competitive advantage. While the overall trends were in line with expectations, I was surprised by the sheer speed at which self-drive technology is being adopted across different manufacturers.
“Five years ago, the idea of a vacuum cleaner navigating a ballroom by itself would have sounded futuristic. Now, it’s becoming reality.”
That said, not every innovation is ready for every environment. In hotels and restaurants, where adaptability, guest interaction, and rapid response are key, the human element remains irreplaceable — at least for now.
How We Keep on Top of Innovations
While exhibitions are a great way to see what’s new, staying informed is a year-round job.
At Act-Clean, we have these strategies:
Strong Supplier Relationships:
We stay close to trusted suppliers, who represent machinery manufacturers and chemical suppliers in the UK. They regularly introduce us to the latest products, from new cleaning machines to safer, more effective chemicals.
Attending Product Launches:
Last summer I attended a special event where the latest iMop innovations were unveiled. Being part of these launches means we see groundbreaking technologies first-hand. “Modern steamers allow us to clean deeply without chemicals, supporting both health and safety goals and environmental sustainability”.
Listening to Clients:
Often, our clients housekeeping teams or back-of-house managers are among the first to hear about new products. Their feedback and curiosity help steer us toward solutions that can improve their operations and satisfaction.
In this way we work collaboratively with our clients.
Monitoring Industry News:
Although there’s no single publication solely for our sector, I regularly review magazines like The Caterer and Restaurant Magazine for mentions of emerging products and practices.
Will Robots Take Over Cleaning?
In short: yes and no!
In certain environments — hospitals, large factories, and places with vast, repetitive spaces — robotic cleaners are likely to increase in use. These places benefit from the precision, consistency, and cost control that automation offers.
However, in the hospitality space, hotels, restaurants, and event venues, the human touch is irreplaceable. Communication, adaptability, and discretion are vital, and no robot can replicate the nuanced service that our teams deliver. Different daily challenges mean we need flexible and responsive cleaning teams that can adapt on the fly.
That said, robotics might be able to supplement our effort in the right areas one day, areas such as cleaning ballrooms or large public areas overnight, which alows our teams to focus on more detailed tasks.
The Future of Cleaning
One exciting area that is seeing renewed focus is steam cleaning.
Although not a brand-new concept, modern steamers are now much more powerful and reliable. Steamers allow us to clean deeply without chemicals, supporting both health and safety goals and environmental sustainability.
“Robotic cleaners are likely to increase in use—but in hospitality, the human touch is irreplaceable.”
At Act-Clean, we’ve integrated steamers into our cleaning schedules at sites such as The Ned, The Ritz, and the Peninsula, to great effect.
Ultimately, our mission at Act-Clean is simple. Find the best products and processes that allow us to deliver five-star results every time.
Whether it’s cutting-edge machinery, eco-friendly chemicals, or smarter ways of working, staying ahead of the curve ensures we stay at the top of our game and deliver exceptional service to every client, every day.
